Stress

Stress can be defined as physical, emotional and/ or mental imbalances. Most of us can admit to at least one of these areas being out of balance. Some of the highest stressors in life are defined as:
1) Changes in a relationship
2) Death of a loved one
3) Changing a job
4) Relocation or moving (of home or school)
5) Physical illness (of self or loved one)
6) Trauma (being involved in or witnessing)
7) Change in financial status
8) Changes in your children’s living situation.
Because all types of stress are linked, all levels should be dealt with. If you are able to encompass balance on more than one level at the same time it is a real bonus.
Some suggestions for coping with physical stress that will help on all levels would be:
• Jumping on a re-bounder (sometimes called a mini-trampoline) while listening to uplifting music for 5-10 minutes daily or more.
• Walking with a friend who has a positive attitude (sometimes your best bet is the dog) 20-30 minutes.
• Laughing, watching comedy TV, movies,or comedy-theater.
(Laughter is actually used by Medical Dr. Bernie Siegel as a major part of his cancer battle plan).
• Try taking a leisurely bath containing 2 cups of Epsom salts and ¼ cup sea salt before bed. This will cause increased perspiration and deep sleep. This tubby is suggested twice weekly. Music and candles are a nice addition.
All of us need a bit of help dealing with the mental/emotional stress.
Most of us are taught as children to only show certain emotions. Not expressing our honest feelings WILL negatively affect our physical health. Here are some suggestions for exercises that will help balance the emotional stressors:
• Do something for yourself every day, even if you can only spare 5 minutes.
• Writing down all of our worries and fears. Acknowledgment of negative feelings is the first step in balancing emotions. This is most beneficial if time is spent writing; paying no attention to grammar, spelling or neatness. It isn’t even necessary to reread or save your writings. Simply writing these feelings will start the healing process. For the really intense feelings it is suggested that you give thanks for the lesson, forgive all involved in the lesson including yourself, and then let it go. (This is often done by safely burning the notes)
• Meditate, pray, “Give it over to God”. It is a must to ask for help, in fact we encourage it. If you don’t ask for it you can’t expect it. Change what you can and except what you can’t and be wise enough to know the difference.
• List all of your blessings and gifts.
• Do a good deed for someone (even if it is difficult you will feel better afterwards).
• Listen to music that makes you feel good…and sing along!
Sometimes we need support from a more supplemental aspect. This is the time to make an appointment with a natural heath practitioner to determine imbalances.
• If the thyroid gland is under-active, depression would be a common symptom. Kelp, Black Walnut both by Oregon’s Wild Harvest or perhaps you’d rather have a combination like ThyroSense or Raw Thyroid would be helpful here.
• Exhausted adrenal glands are common in today’s low nutrient, high stress world. This inhibits our ability to cope with stress. We use Stress Guard (Oregon’s Wild Harvest), Licorice Root (Now), Panothenic Acid (Bluebonnet) or Adrenal Stress End (Enzymatic) to help this.
• Toxins in the bowel will make you irritable and sluggish. Fiber (like Organic Bowel Cleanse Fiber – Renew Life) or a good colon cleanse like Organic Total Body Cleanse by Renew Life helps.
• Poor digestion keeps you from absorbing minerals needed for mental balance. Medizyme, Optimum Enzymes (Bluebonnet) or Q-Zymes Ultra (Garden Of Life) are all great.
• Acidity in the body leaches precious minerals from the bloodstream, again causing imbalance. PH test paper will help determine this problem. Calcium/Magnesium (Bluebonnet) supplements and a diet rich in green leafy vegetables will be beneficial.
• Heavy metal poisoning as well as side effects of medications (both prescription and over the counter) will both create problem areas Green Vibrance (Vibrant Health) is tailor made for this purpose.
• Some poor quality supplements or the wrong nutrients for you will cause added stress on the organs of elimination.
• Bach Flower remedies that help are:
o Star of Bethlehem is for grief, trauma or loss.
o Mimulus is used for known fears.
o Elm is for those overwhelmed by responsibility
o Sweet chestnut for those who have reached their limit and fear an impending nervous breakdown.
o We do suggest that you be evaluated for your specific needs.
• B-Vitamins (Bluebonnet) are essential to mental clarity and balance.
• Calcium/Magnesium (Bluebonnet) nourishes the nerves that transmit impulses.
• Essential Fatty Acids, like Bluebonnet, Barleans and Nordic Naturals offer, support the myelin sheaths which coat the nerve endings to transmit nerve impulses.
• 5-HTP (LifeTime), Valerian Root (Oregon’s Wild Harvest) and St. John’s Wort (Oregon’s Wild Harvest or NOW) are common herbal supplements when dealing with depression or anxiety.
• Mood Support (NOW) is pretty self-explanatory and it works well.
Dietary changes that are needed for balance:
• Reduce or eliminate caffeine that can tax the adrenal glands.
• Reduce acid producing foods.( Sugar, alcohol, processed and artificial foods).
• Chew your food well in a peaceful environment.
• Increase nutrient rich fresh fruits and vegetables.
